Friday October 12- The number one seeded Division I club hockey team, the Ohio Bobcats, faced off against the number four seeded Oklahoma Sooners in Bird Arena earlier tonight, it was the first of two games that the two teams will play this weekend.
Ohio jumped out of the gates quickly when James Howard assisted a Nick Rostek goal just over two minutes into the first period. After that, the Bobcats were very conservative in moving the puck up the ice. After having five of the first seven shots on goal, the Bobcats were outshot by the Sooners 11-5 to end the first period. Later in the first, Sooner Joe Adams shot a puck that was deflected into the Bobcat goal, tying the score at 1-1. After that, the Sooners scored another goal to go up 2-1 before the end of the first period.
In the second period, Ohio had three power plays, but all three were killed by Oklahoma. Through the entire period, the Bobcats only posted three shots on goal, compared to the Sooners nine. The Ohio offense looked timid at times and played the power plays extremely conservatively, sometimes struggling to advance the puck onto the Sooners’ side of the ice. Oklahoma was in control throughout the period, as they were for the majority of the game.
As the second period ended, a fight with 38.9 seconds left on the clock resulted in another Bobcats power play. After the intermission, Ohio came out aggressively, having two shots on goal in the first three minutes of the period, one of them, a score from Michael Harris and assisted by Nathan De La Torre to even the game at two scores a piece.
The Bobcats created scoring opportunities throughout the third period and goalie Fedor Dushkin had a key save with 6:04 left in the period to give the Bobcats a sense of momentum for the first time since the beginning of the game.
With 1:45 left in the game, Tyler Pilmore scored a breakaway, go-ahead goal that capped the Bobcats’ 3-2 come-from-behind victory. The two opponents will play again tomorrow night at 7:30 in Bird Arena.
